Document Analysis Introduction
Embedded below is the scholarly journal that I believed pertained directly to my research question. I chose to highlight certain aspects of the content and also focus on the structure of the document. The main idea of the document is the effect of college students taking a Nutrition Courses and the analysis in the journal gives me some conclusions that I can directly relate to my own research since my focus is around the Nutrition course ESS 3.

Analysis of Scholarly Journal
What is the document about?
- The title of the document explains directly what the document is about: Effect of Nutrition Intervention Using a General Nutrition Course for Promoting Fruit and Vegetable Consumption among College Students. This journal presents a primary research experiment where data was collected over 3 days and analyzed to conclude something about the research question at hand. The documents research question was about how a general nutrition class can promote a greater consumption of fruits and vegetables for college students. The journal explains the measurement of total consumption among college students of fresh vegetables, french fries, vegetable juice, fresh fruit, canned fruit, and fruit juice.
- The document presents statistical design for the research. It includes an objective, design, setting, participants (subjects), measures and methods, analysis, results, and a conclusion. The document includes the analysis of results that indicated college students who participated in the experiment and took the the general nutrition course increased their consumption of total fruits and vegetables, increased consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, decreased intake of french fries, and females responded better to the increase in vegetable consumption.
- The document also uses another study about the influence of newsletters that promote fruits and vegetables in college students and describes how the study found an increase in fruit and vegetable intake among college students.
What is the purpose of the document?
- The purpose of this document is to present the influence of a general nutrition course as an intervention that focuses on the prevention of chronic diseases caused by dietary intake and its effectiveness in increasing fruit and vegetable consumption among college students. The purpose is also to show the audience that the general nutrition course does have an influence on college students and their intake of more fruits and vegetables which can better the lives of college students, reduce chronic disease, and better the lives of the future generations as well.
Who are the readers of this document?
- The audience of this document is health professionals since the authors directly mention that the “dietary patterns of college students should be a concern to health professionals” (Cain-Bish and Ha 2009) since the food patterns developed in college affect the students future health and the health of their future families may also develop similar dietary intake patterns which can be good or bad.
- Another audience of the document could be general nutrition classes because the authors emphasize the importance of the long term effects of college students having healthy eating patterns--starting with the consumption of fruits and vegetables.
To understand and use this document, what would the reader already have to know?
- The reader would have to understand what chronic diseases are, what types of chronic diseases exist, and how a person can get a chronic disease. Chronic diseases include cardiovascular disease, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, cancers, or other diseases related to health. This knowledge of chronic diseases is needed because certain intake of foods, vitamins and minerals can increase or decrease a person's risk for a particular disease. For instance, the consumption of saturated and trans fat foods can increase a persons risk for heart disease.
Why might a reader find this document important?
- The reader will find this document important because of the rippling effects of what was concluded by the authors. Since their research found that a general nutrition course can increase a college students intake of fruits and vegetables, then the eating habits of college students can be passed down generations to their families. the development of good eating habits (eating more fruits and vegetables) can have a positive impact on college students and eventually on their families who will most likely adapt the same dietary habits. Also, the importance of this journal is seen in the breakdown of the nutrients that college students are deficient in. Fruits and vegetables can provide a greater amount of these essential nutrients and therefore reduce chronic disease in college students.
FORMAL FEATURES OF THE DOCUMENT
The formatting of this scholarly journal is very straightforward with no images, but it does contain two tables: one presents the class activities for the nutrition course, and the other is statistical showing the percentages and values proving the research conclusion.
The language of this journal is very formal, presents many factual evidence and statistics. This was very effective for their purpose of using statistical research to conclude and make a generalization about a certain population (college students) .This journal presents their research using no first-person pronouns and mirrors the structure of a science lab report with the use of passive voice. According to Maddalena, this ensures that the authors "don't rely on personal experiences or perspectives where [they] should be providing concrete, researched support for [their] arguments" (2010) and the journal solely relies on concrete arguments since this is an experiment built on the foundation of statistical evidence.
The components of this scholarly journal include the basic components of a scientific method research paper: It includes an abstract, an introduction, methods, statistical analysis, results, a discussion, and finishes with the implications for research and practice. This document is fairly lengthy, which is expected of this statistical research because it follows the standard. The standard is the inclusion of methods, statistical research, analysis, and a conclusion. Primary research is used because the authors have performed the experiment themselves and done the research themselves and have gathered a conclusion about that research.
DATA INTERPRETATION
What connections can you make between what you have experienced in your context (class or organization) as a writer, reader, and/or learner and what you are seeing in this document?
- I can see connections between this scholarly journal and my own observations currently being in the ESS 3 Nutrition for Health Class at UCSB. The scholarly journal presented research that found students who took the general nutrition course generally increased their consumption of fruits and vegetables and in my own experiences, I have found this to be true. The students, including myself, created a food log and track the foods that we consumed over a time period of 3 days and the experiment performed in the journal mirrors this assignment.
In what ways do you see ideas in the reading on persuasion and the reading on scientific writing reflected in the data you generated from your article?
- I see some of the logic, emotion, and credibility that the article mentions in the journal that I have analyzed. I see examples of emotional appeals used by mentioning the impact on future health of college students families Logic is the main appeal used in the journal it is honest information and since the journal is not an argumentative essay it is just trying to present information then it is not falsifying information or exaggerating, it is presenting real, concrete examples and logic. It is logical that the consumption of fruits and vegetables would increase your health and decrease your risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and cancer.
